Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Sebring 2000 Convertible: code 0442, ultrasonic leak detection, emission control system

Question
Hello,

I am having a problem erasing the Service Engine Light since it keeps on coming back on even if I already checked all the hoses related to the EVAP for leaks, it is giving a read as follows on the OBDII Error code:
P0442
EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Small0

We checked the gas cap hoses etc. and seems to look OK? Had similar issue with my 2001 Voyager with a Mitsu V6 engine and took a chance by changing the O2 sensor and it turned off. Could this be the same situation with the Sebring? Got it used with 103,000 miles on it, are such sensors due for replacements?
Please advise, thank you.

Alex

Answer
Hi Alex,
A small leak is defined as being .04-.08"
The repair manual suggests looking closely at the gas cap, the rollover valve, canister, leak detection pump, and evap purge solenoid. After testing those by means of an ultrasonic leak detection tester if nothing is found then replace the leak detection pump. But check the wiring between the evap emission solenoid...leak detection pump... and pcm, and of course the big hoses. I don't see any suggestion for replacing the O2 sensor in that troubleshoot test.  Because there are separate codes for those sensors I would rely on that as the guidance because no routine replacement based upon mileage is listed.
