Chrysler Repair: 00 minivan: no start, pulley bolt, 4 digit numbers

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 T&C.  It won't start.  I checked the fuel pump and fuel is pumping when I turn it over.  I hooked up a timing light and when I turn it over....no light.  I assume it is electrical now.  There is no codes to read as the check engine lighth is not on.  Where to begin?

ANSWER: Hi Sam,
The check engine light doesn't have to be on for their to be codes stored. So use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then notice the check engine light remains "on" but begins to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to assure an accurate count. Then get back to me with the results and we'll go from there. If that approach doesn't produce any flashing, then do it again only this time observe the odometer window to see if it changes to read any 4-digit numbers, a different type of fault code.

PS Use the 'thank/rate' tab to get back to me with any information, without having to wait for me to be 'available' to take a question.
Also mention which engine is in the minivan. Also, were there anyother symptoms before the no start situation developed?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The check engine does not flash doing that.  The odometer looks like it goes all 7's, then 8's, then 7's.  It kinda scrolls 787.  Any ideas from here?

Answer
Hi Sam,
The odo scrolling is not likely to be anything related to engine fault codes. Most likely the only way to get fault codes will be to borrow a code reader, or if by luck it starts go to an Autozone store for a free readout or an independent garage and get a readout for under $40.
If you have no spark, the most likely reason is the failure of one of the engine position sensors (cam or crank). You can test for signal on the sensors' signal wire by looking for voltage pulses between 5 and 0.3V as you turn the engine over by hand using a socket on the crank pulley bolt, and with the ignition in the 'on' position. If you know where the sensors are, the crank sensor signal and ground wires are gray/black and black/light blue, while the cam sensor is tan/yellow and black/light blue. If you don't know where they are tell me which engine you have and I can describe the locations. The absence of one of those signals is the most common reason for no spark.
