Chrysler Repair: 1992 Chrysler Lebaron cranks but wont start, chrysler lebaron convertible, 1992 chrysler lebaron convertible

Question
I have a 1992 Chrysler LeBaron convertible  AJ  body with 2.5 L  4-cyl.  non-turbo engine. Engine cranks, but will not start.  No codes appear, except end code 55. The ASD relay never energizes. Pin 51 of he SBEC never goes to GND. (if grounded, both fuel pump & ASD relays energize ,current drain from pin 51 to ground with an  ma  meter is approx 260ma.,(current of both relay coils), and fuel pump runs.)   Removed & checked all relays to assure that when energized, the contact resistance is low, approx  .1ohms. Still won't start. No spark present, but ignition coil is good.
+12V is present at pin 19 of the SBEC.
+ 8V  is present at pin 7 of the SBEC.
+ 5V is  present at pin 6 of the SBEC.
+ 12 is present at pin 3 & 9 of the SBEC.
pins 11 & 12 are GND.
HELP  & Thank You. Gene

Answer
Hi Gene,
Thanks for the detailed summary. When you say the ASD relay never energizes, does that include the 1 second or so when you turn the switch to the "run" position? That would at least prove that the SBEC is able to close the ASD and fuel pump relays (you should hear the fuel pump run for a second or so). If it does, then the SBEC would appear to be capable of closing the ASD, if not, then I would suspect the SBEC. If it does, then I would suspect the Hall effect sensor in the distributor is putting out a too weak signal to satisfy the SBEC requirements, but not so weak as to cause a fault code 11. I would try measuring the pulses between the gray/black wire and the black/light blue wires of the distributor pick-up lead. It should bounce between 5 and 0.3V as you rotate the engine by hand using the crank pulley bolt and a ratchet handle. I have seen various sensors get weak without setting a code.

PS Please let me know what you learn. I have the same engine so this is of direct interest to me. Use the "thank/rate" tab to respond without having to wait for me to be 'available'.
