Chrysler Repair: 1996 Caravan: no spark., crank pulley, crank sensor

Question
Hey Roland, I have a 1996 caravan that has no spark. I also have no error codes when I turn the key of on off on off on. I get a 12 (which is the start of the sequence) and a 55 (the end of the sequence) but nothing in between the two. It's a new coil and crank sensor (a rabbit chewed the wires in half on the crank sensor so I had to replace it) Now I get no spark. I tried to test the hall effects sensor with a 9 volt battery and a volt meter and it seems to be working but I don't know if that's the best way to tell. Can one of the oxygen sensors stop it from firing? I noticed on the schematic that both were hooked to the coil. Any other suggestions?? Thanks, Pat

Answer
Hi Pat,
I would check to make sure that you are getting 12v to the spark coil pack on the dark green/orange wire when you are cranking. If you are then that would say that the two sensors (cam and crank) are ok. If not, then I would check the sensors while cranking the engine over by hand using the bolt on the crank pulley, with the ignition 'on' of course. Also check to hear the fuel pump run for about a second when you turn the key to the 'run' position as a check on the ASD relay.
To check the sensors measure between the black/light blue wire (signal ground) and the  gray/black (on the crank sensor) or the tan/yellow (on the cam sensor) and watch the voltage to pulse between 5v and 0.3v several times per revolution.
Oxygen sensors won't stop spark. They all need that 12v on the dark green/orange, thus their sharing the wire, but the oxy sensor itself will not stop the spark if bad.  Only loss of 12v on the dark green/orange and/or failure of one or the other engine position sensors which will stop the spark signal from the pcm.

PS You can get back to me with a progress report/question by using the "thank and rate" tab where there is a comments area. Thus you won't have to wait for me to be "available" for a follow-up. Also, mention which engine you have as there are 4 different possibilities.
