Chrysler Repair: 41TE transmission leak diagnosis, postal mail, torque converter

Question
Hi Roland, Question on a '95 Lebaron.  I have one that's leaking quite a bit fluid right between the engine and transmission, right around  the torque converter area I'd say.  Stiff shits OK, but leaking a lot.  Is this something common to these transmissions?  Does it sound like a leaky seal at the pump?  or perhaps the torgue converter itself?  and is there any service work that can be performed while the transmission is still the car?  Also, is this the 604 transmission in the '95 lebaron?       Thanks -Paul

Answer
Hi Paul,
I assume that you have found the fluid to be red in color which indicates a leak of the trans axle or the torque converter. There are actually several possible areas that could leak. There are a couple of pages in the manual that discuss this and also show how to position a clean piece of  1/32 sheet metal on the torque converter access plate's inner surface to identify the leak via the pattern it leaves on the material. If you would like I can xerox copy and postal mail you the pages that describe the test and interpretation of the results. It appears that there is little likelihood of stopping the leak without removing the unit. I have not heard of a more likely type of leak.
It is the A640 but somewhere along the line the the designation was changed to be 41TE.
