Chrysler Repair: Sticking Brakes, master brake cylinder, internal friction

Question
On long trip hot day stop and go traffic, front brakes are sticking and getting very hot. Brake pedal is stuck down. Pull off road and once it cools off brake pedal releases and works okay (a little spongy not tight) for about an hour and a half of driving and when hit traffic stop and go pedal gets tight sticks down and sticking starts again.

Answer
Hi Joseph,
There are two spring for the brake pedal system: one on the brake pedal mechanism itself, one inside the master brake cylinder. I suspect that one of those springs is either broken or, in the case of the pedal, detached. So I would look at the pedal mechanism for such a spring and inspect it. If you find nothing awry there, then you probably will need to replace the master cylinder. The overheating of the system has probably softened the rubber seals in the master cylinder and increased the internal friction so that its internal spring is unable to push back the cylinder which therefore cause the system to 'drag' the brake pads at the wheels which causes heating, etc and so you are in a vicious circle.
