Chrysler Repair: 2000 Sebring:ABS / Trac lights on, blown fuses, fuse box

Question
The ABS, Trac on & Trac off lights come on when my car goes over about 15 MPH. The lights go off when I idle. The car has 207,000 miles on it. Is it safe to drive? Is this a brake issue?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Shell,
The design of the ABS and traction control system is such that if it malfunctions it will not impact the overall brake system so it is safe to drive. Only if the red brake light came on would there be a question of safety.
The light coming on at 15 mph is normal because that speed is the point where the system does a self-check. Because something in the system is wrong, those lights are coming on. I would begin by checking for blown fuses: in the box under the hood #2,4,9,10,19, and in the under dash fuse box #11. If those are OK then the best approach is to get a diagnostic readout box read of the fault codes that are stored in the controller for the antilock brake system. The reader is plugged into diagnostic connector located under the dash, just above the hood release on the underside of the dash, next to the kick panel. You may be able to get a readout for free at an Autozone parts store or for about $40 from an independent shop. Get the name of the fault codes.
