Question
I have a 1997 chrysler neon that has started giving be idling problems (cutting out) especially when cold. Generally when its been running for 10mins it fine.
Any ideas.. ?

Answer
Hi Chris,
I suspect it is a problem with the mixture when the engine is cold, but the best approach would be to try for fault code readout of the engine controller. Use the ignition key:"On-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light which remains "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat the procedure to assure an accurate set of counts. Then combine the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form the 2-digit fault codes. Then either write back with the results or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code translation.
The last code is always 55 which means end of readout. The fault code for the coolant temp sensor which has a major role in the mixture during warm up is either a 17 or a 22.
Another possibility is a sticking egr valve which will when stuck ajar lean out the mixture. You can lubricate that WD-40 around the valve stem. Tell me which engine you have and we'll go from there.
