Chrysler Repair: 1988 Le Baron Convertible:concealed headlamp doors, motor mechanism, relay control

Question
I need to find out more information about the head lamp door relay.  The head lamp doors will go about half way up, but not close all the way.  The car has been restored and this problem just does not make the car look finished.  Where do I go to get the information I need.  Thanks a bunch.

Answer
Hi Judy,
If the door motor is running (by the sound of it) for enough time to open or close them, but they just don't move through the full range of rotation (e.g. they "slip"), then it is not the relay system but rather the gears inside the motor itself that are worn out. You would need to get a new or working used motor from a wreck to repair that sort of a problem.
Otherwise let me know and I can tell you about the relay control. It is a single solid state device that is located under the soft top dash pad, on the centerline of the the dash. I suspect it is the gears and not the relay control. I have the same car and that is why I suggest this.
If the doors are both moving in tandem about the same way, then there is no other mechanical explanation other than those gears. If one door worked differently than the other, then there is clamp that attaches the door rotation shaft to a rod that goes thru the motor mechanism, and one of the two door clamps is loose at the shaft coupling. But that is not how you described the problem.
