Chrysler Repair: front left signal bulb blows, light buld, alcohol swab

Question
Hi.
I got a 2000 dodge caravan.
I replaced the front left signal light buld
about a dozen times when it blows it blows a hole in it.
Is there a an electrical component that could cause this problem.
I just put a new one in today and only lasted 4 hours and has a hole in the
bulb again.
                                             Any Ideas.
                                            Cheers George

Answer
Hi Billy,
I haven't heard of that sort of a problem with turn signal bulbs. I can't understand how a higher than normal voltage could be present at the socket. You might check with a voltmeter nonetheless to see if it is higher than 14.6V when you have it activated. I don't think there is any such voltage source in the circuitry, except for the spark coil.
About the only sorts of insults that come to mind are a thermal shock (external water intruding on the hot surface) or chemical contamination (like a finger print on the glass which can definitely damage headlamps of the present day halogen design). You might try to carefully clean the surface of the bulb after installing it, using a alcohol swab or similar solvent to remove any grease, to see if that circumvents the problem.
