Chrysler Repair: Jeep Evaporative Emission System, vacuum hoses, jeep manuals

Question
My check engine light comes on and the scanner says I have a leak in the EES. I replaced the gas cap with a new one from the dealer, no luck. What is the likely culprit?

Answer
Hi Bruce,
It would appear that you have a recent model because of the fault code you mention. The system includes the air space above the fuel in the gas tank, an evaporative emission cannister usually located in the right front corner of the engine compartment, a control valve operated by a solenoid, and a leak detection pump, and finally the vacuum hoses that connect these parts together. Most likely it is one of the hoses that is cracked or has a loose fitting at one of the components. I don't have any Jeep manuals but you might try going to Autozone.com to see what they offer in the way of do-it-yourself service information. Alternatively, the Haynes manuals are usually pretty good and less expensive than a factory shop manual. If you can find the parts I mentioned, then look at all the hose connections and the hoses themselves. It may just be a loose hose clamp or a cracked hose, rather than any of the components that is at fault.
