Chrysler Repair: Transmision hangs in gear: 4-speed electronic transaxle?, torque converter clutch, tranny problems

Question
A 93 Labaron conv. when cold especially, the tranny feels like a manual. It feels like it is struggling to downshift and then  causes the motor to stall when you come to a stop. I am getting code 12-32. Just bought on ebay and unfortunately was not told of tranny problems.

Answer
Hi Eric,
It sounds to me like your torque converter lock-up clutch is hanging up in the locked position. I assume you have the 4-speed electronic transaxle. If not, then let me know. This clutch is electronically controlled by the transmission control module. There is a possibility that by running through the procedure whereby the control module "learns" or adjusts the function of the clutch it will work correctly. This procedure is performed using the Chrysler diagnostic readout box called a DRB II that plugs into a 6-pin data link connector under the dash, between the steering column and the left end of the dash. So I would suggest that you look for a trans shop that has that box and the cartridge that covers your year (or probably at a higher cost, a dealer) and ask if they are capable of doing the "torque converter clutch break in procedure". That procedure is described in full in the '94 manual I have on page 21-101.
Ask them to confirm that this might indeed correct the problem or not.
The 12 code just means the battery was disconnected recently and the 32 code means there is a problem with the egr valve (if your engine has an egr valve; look on the underhood sticker to see). Neither of those would cause your problem if indeed the stall is purely related to the torque converter remaining locked up when it shouldn't be and thus stalling the engine. On the egr, I would check the movement of the stem of the valve (put a screwdriver tip in the slot of the stem and move it back and forth). If the stem is sticky in the closing direction then spray it where it enters the valve with WD-40 to free up the action.
