Chrysler Repair: 95 LeBaron inner tie rod replacement?, inner tie rod, labaron

Question
HOW DO I GET IT OUT OF THE STEERING BOX OF A 95 LABARON GTC

Answer
Hi Edward,
I looked at the manual and it appears that the inner rod is part of the rack and pinion itself but is not described as to how to replace it. On the other hand a crash manual I have shows the inner rod as a replaceable part but only for the 87-89 model year. 90-95 is shown as a part of the rack and pinion and not available separately.
However, if you remove the boot at the end of the steering gear housing (there are three boot clamps that holds it in place, notice the overall position before you remove it for proper reassembly) you may find that the inner rod is simply screwed onto the end of the rack and held in place by a lock nut. It appears that you have to expand the 3 clamps to get inside the area to examine the inner tie rod connection to the rack. There is an inner and outer clamp on the boot, and you will find a clamp hidden under the boot at the inside for what is called the snorkel that holds the structure of the boot that is hidden and attached it to the breathing tube. So find all three clamps and release them (you will need to get replacements at a dealer I suspect). But again, my suspicion is that you can't get a new inner rod and you may have to replace the rack and pinion.
