Chrysler Repair: no headlights 1997 dodge ram, high beams, headlamp switch

Question
I have replaced multi - function sw. on steering col., checked fuse. no lights - get high beam when you manually hold hi/low beam lever -up.

Answer
Hi Doyle.
I don't claim to have expertise in the truck lines but I would see if you have a 'low beam relay' in either the power distribution box under hood or under the dash or maybe in a relay block on the left cowl (to the left of your left leg). The high beam "optical horn" is supplied by a different pathway than the normal low/high beams which both depend upon the proper function of the low beam relay. The orange/white wire from the headlamp switch is what has to be grounded to get that relay to close. It it closes but you get no lights then the internal contacts of the relay may be oxidized. It it doesn't close then the switch that turns on the headlights isn't grounding the red/white wire.
This is all based on a '95 van wiring diagram that I assume is similar to what is in your truck but I can't be sure, of course.
