Chrysler Repair: Timing Belts: 2.7/3.2/3.5L, chrysler concorde, 2000 chrysler concorde

Question
I have a 2000 Chrysler Concorde with almost 92,000 miles. I am wondering if I should change the timing belt/chain or wait and replace it when it goes.  Does this model car have a belt that will destroy my engine if it breaks?

Answer
Hi Carol,
It depends upon which engine you have. As I read the manual, and let me caution you that is the basis of my opinion, the 2.7L engine has 2 timing chains and for that reason requires no preventive maintenance as far as potential breakage is concerned.
On the other hand the 3.2/3.5L engine has a timing belt, and is not a "free-wheeling" design (which means it would be damaged in the event of timing belt breakage) and for that reason it is recommended that the belt be changed at 105,000 miles.
Because of the cost it may be appropriate to inspect the belt when you reach that mileage, by removing one of the covers, and rotate the engine via the crankshaft to inspect the condition of the belt. If you find it to be in good condition then it may not be necessary to replace it at that time, but rather to inspect it periodically. I would consider that option if the engine has been driven conservatively and you live in a moderate climate region.
So look at the valve cover on the engine or the underhood sticker to see which engine you have in the car.
