Chrysler Repair: 1999 Chrysler Intrepid, chrysler intrepid, engine computer

Question
Hi

I have a 1999 Chrysler Intrepid.  There was no problem at all with the car until I took it in for an emissions test, the garage said that they couldn't do the emissions test because the "anti theft" came on and that the computer would have to be re-set at the dealer.

I drove the car home and on the way the check engine light came on and the car died.

I toed the car into the dealership to have it hooked up to the computer for diagnosis however, they said the computer in my Intrepid needs to be replaced and reprogramed for the vehicles VIN #.  And that they can't gaurantee that this is the problem.  Having the computer reprogrammed is very expensive, and may turn out to have not been the issue at all!

Hence, I'm wondering if you agree or if you can think of anything else that may have gone wrong before I spend all of this money.

I have a feeling that the reason the car won't start has something to do with the anti theft which may have been activated by the garage conducting the emissions test?  Is this possible?  Is there any way to "turn off" the anti theft.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

Answer
The dealership would still be able to talk to the engine computer if the alarm was active. If they cant talk to the PCM then yeah they would need to replace it or have a wire repair or what ever the issue is. If u ever want to get the Tag then yeah u will be required t do this first  and maybe more .I live in ATlanta
