Chrysler Repair: 1996 Plymouth Voyager Starter, starter solenoid, plymouth voyager

Question
Q: 3.0 engine For the first time (158,000 Km)when I started the van, the starter didn't disengage (I think). When I tried to turn it off, the engine kept running. Turning the key back and forth finally made it stop. Is it:

The starter
the starter relay
the starter solenoid
The BCM?

Answer
Hi Roy,
It sounds like it might be the starter relay sticking closed or possibly the ignition switch itself sticking closed in the start position, but the release of the starter motor from its stuck position could also have been coincidental to you manipulation of the key. The only way to tell would be to be prepared with the hood open and a helper to start the engine while you have the power distribution center box next to the battery open and when/if this happens again immediately pull the starter relay to see if that causes the starter gear to disengage or not. If it does, then it is either the relay or the ignition switch (and you can check that with a voltmeter on the red/yellow wire's pin in that socket {# 86 or #52} that carries the voltage from  switch to see if that is sticking "on" or not). If it doesn't disengage when you pull the relay then it has to be the starter solenoid or the bendix gear itself (either case the starter has to be removed and tested). The BCM and PCM are not involved in maintaining the power to the starter motor (though they are needed to start the process), so I would not focus on those.
