Chrysler Repair: 2000 T & C engine stalls when put into gear, gas mileage, torque converter

Question
QUESTION: I have had problems with my Mini van "bucking" and some times stalling when I come to a stop.  When driving everything seems fine with no problems.  I thought it was missing so I changed the spark plug but am still having the problem.  It seems to idle fine but wants to kill when put into gear.

ANSWER: Hi Mark,
My suggestion would be to get a fault code readout of the powertrain controller and transmission controller (one plug and one readout should do both) memories. There is probably at least one four-digit fault code stored that will give us a clue as to what is wrong. It may be that the torque converter lock-up which is supposed to only come into play in top gear is partially engaged when it shouldn't be or it could be an egr issue (though that usually affects idle behavior as well). The Autozone part stores often offer such readouts for free, or you can get the service at independent shops for under $40, whereas the dealers will often charge in the range of $80. Ask for the specific code number(s), what they mean, what they recommend as the repair, and how much? Then get back with the results and we can compare what you were told with the shop manual. Also mention which size engine you have.

QUESTION: In reading more about the lockup converters it sounds like the problem I'm having.  Where on the transmission is this located. I have have also read that if this is unplugged on some vehicles it will not harm the vehicle only cause to loss a little gas mileage. Is this true?

Answer
On the three-speed non-electronic automatic it is located around the converter area of the transmission, internal but possibly accessible thru a plate. On that transmission there is a separate solenoid with its own plug and wire that can be disconnected.
But on the more common 4-speed electronic there is not such a separate control as the electrical wiring is all handled by a single multiwire plug and I am uncertain whether it actually has a specific lock up at all. So unless you have the three speed non-electronic the option of disconnecting the tcc (torque converter clutch) as the solution is not readily available. So get the code readout if you have the 4-speed unit.
