Chrysler Repair: 2.5L V-6 stalls when stopping, chrysler cirrus, 1997 chrysler cirrus

Question
I have a 1997 chrysler cirrus, the water pump froze in it and broke the timing belt, the belt and pump was replaced and now the car stalls at every stop, Why?

Answer
Hi Jamie,
The one possibility given the history of the timing belt being replaced is that there was a mistake made when the belt was installed that resulted in a mismatch of the timing marks on the cam shaft sprockets as compared to the crankshaft. The person who did that work could be requested to inspect for that possibility. I would do that however only after checking the engine controller memory for fault codes that it may have stored which would reveal another cause for stalling. This can be done for free, often, at an Autozone parts store, or for about $40 at an independent shop on a "special". Ask what the code numbers are, what they mean, what they recommend, and how much it will cost. Then write back with the results and we can compare that to the shop manual. If no codes come up, then I would go to the person who did the engine work and ask them to recheck the timing of the sprockets relative to the crankshaft.
