Chrysler Repair: A/C Clutch Replacement on 1999 300M, clutch replacement, compressor clutch

Question
This might end up being a simple question, depending on details, but I can't seem to locate any detailed instructions...

In any case, a 1999 Chrysler 300M with a failed A/C compressor clutch (squealed, blew smoke & sparks kind of failure).  Solved the problem temporarily by cutting the (now damaged :-) belt.

In any case, we'd like to fix it.  A compressor is significantly more expensive than just the clutch.  Wondering if trying to simply replace the clutch is a reasonable first effort.  If it didn't work, the clutch can be preserved for a new compressor.

Problem is: Can't find any detailed instructions on removal and replacement of the a/c compressor clutch (i.e., procedures and tools required), or opinion on whether this is a reasonable use of time.  We're assuming that if only the clutch failed, it did no damage to the compressor, but we don't know the odds of that naturally.

Seeking opinion and steps, if at all possible...

Thanks..!

Answer
Hi Robert,
Are you sure it is the clutch and not the compressor that locked up? It sounds like the compressor locked up, not that the clutch failed. I would picture it simply slipping with not alot of fireworks it the clutch was the only failed part. See if you can turn the compressor shaft, as a test of my theory. In any case, there are 3 pages that describe replacing the clutch that I could xerox and postal mail to you. Just use the "thank and rate" tab to give me your mailing address.
