Chrysler Repair: Air Conditioner Drain Plugged?, chrysler products, stiff wire

Question
Roland,  I know that you are listed under only Chrysler products, but I was wondering what would make my 1996 GM Z71 pickup have water flowing sounds come from under my dash on the passenger side by the foot space?  My husband says that maybe the air conditioner drain is plugged.  Do you think this is the problem?  If so, how do I unplug it?  If you would like for me to ask another expert, let me know.  They were all on vacation or maxed out.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Sherryl,
If there is water in the cabin, such as wet floor carpeting, and it does not smell like antifreeze, then it is no doubt moisture that has been condensed out of the incoming air by the a/c evaporator plates. It drips down to a pan under the evaporator where it should flow to a drain in the lower part of the firewall panel that separates the engine compartment from the cabin. There is a hole in firewall through which a small rubber tube protrudes and that is the drain pan outlet. You would normally expect to see water collecting on the ground where you park the vehicle after you have been on a ride with the a/c in use. I am sure you have seen that under parked vehicles in the summer time. If you don't have such a puddle under your pickup then the drain tube is blocked. So look for the drain from under the vehicle, somewhere near the floor level of the firewall panel and probably around midline of the body. Use a stiff wire in the lumen of the tube to clear it out.
If the moisture however smells of antifreeze that would signify a leak in the heater core and you would expect to find that you need to add coolant as a consequence of the loss.
Those are the possibilities and their repair.
