Chrysler Repair: Charging circuit problem-code 41, battery discharge, code 41

Question
My 3 liter Lebaron is not charging. I have tried...replacing the battery, alternator and computer, all to no avail. The check engine light is on and the code I get is 41 which says something about the alternator field switch? My local Advance says it has to to do with an Automatic shut down? But have no suggestions. Do you? Anything would help at this point. There are no obvious problems with the wiring either. Thanks in advance for any help

Answer
Hi Mike,
There is probably a wire that is open. The alternator field circuit involves two wires: a dark blue wire that provides a 12V source and originates as the ouput of the autoshutdown relay, so if the engine will run (spark and fuel supply) that relay has to be working and you should measure 12V on the dark blue wire at the alternator. The other wire is dark green and it comes from the engine controller (computer) pin 20 of the 60-way connector. When the battery voltage is too low the controller should ground that pin and that should cause the battery discharge light to go off as the alternator begins to generate current. So I would then verify that the dark green wire between the alternator and pin 20 is patent. There is a 10 pin connector located behind the battery that might be disconnected or otherwise compromised should you find either no 12V at the dark blue or no continuity of the dark green wire between the alternator and the computer.
So that is what I would check. Also the black/gray wire at the alternator should be found to have battery voltage present on it at all times. If not look for a natural color torpedo-shaped connector behind the battery for possible disconnection.
Those are my suggestions.
