Chrysler Repair: 1999 Chrysler Town & Country 3.8L A/C problem, postal mail, xerox copy

Question
I am having a problem with the A/C. While driving on the interstate, warm air started coming out of the vents instead of cold. When the car was started the next morning it was blowing warm air all the time. When I put the car in park, the air started blowing cold. The past few days it has been blowing cold (city driving). Today when I was driving it was cold for the most part. I had 1 warm spell. When it got warm I turned the front and rear A/C off for approx. 5 seconds and then back on. It started blowing cold again. Any idea where I can begin with this? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kelly,
The most common reason why the cooling function is unpredictable is that the amount of refrigerant in the system is just marginal and so a pressure sensor will disable the compressor for a while and then it will allow it to work again for a bit, as a protection against damage to the compressor. So a visit to an air conditioning shop may be the most appropriate thing to do to see if you need addition of some refrigerant.
There is self-diagnostic capabilities built-in to the system but they are rather lengthy and complicated. If you find the referant level is OK and you still have a problem then let me know and I can xerox copy and postal mail you the pages that describe how to use the self-diagnostics to test for different types of problems unrelated to the refrigerant level.
