Chrysler Repair: Electronic transaxle substitution: where is the distance sensor?, lebaron convertible, voltage pulses

Question
I have a '91 Lebaron convertible with a 3.0L engine. The tranny went in it. I took a tranny out of a '93 Lebaron sedan. The upside it works great, the down side, I can't find where to plug in my electronic speedo. Everything I read says it plugs into the transaxle housing extension ( which is there) but there is no receptacle for my plug. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Answer
Hi Mike,
The problem is that between '91 and '93 the speedo input data source changed for some Chrysler cars, but not for the '93 LeBaron Sedan nor the convertible. Are you certain that the '93 donor sedan was a LeBaron, and not an LHS, for example?
In your original transmission there was a "distance sensor" in the location that you described, in addition to the sensor for the output speed on the front of the transmission (just to the right of the vertical shift rod as viewed from the front of the car) which is used for the control of the transmission. In the LH cars of '93-on the distance sensor was eliminated and the signal from the output speed sensor was digitized at the transcontroller and sent on the data bus to the engine controller and to the instrument cluster (along with the digitized data for all the other gauges on the dash).
So I am not certain what is the best way to get a pulsing signal for you speedometer (8 pulses per revolution of the right half axle shaft). Is there any possibility of modifying the transaxle housing extension to insert the old sensor into this '93 transaxle?
You might also try to tap into the output speed sensor wires and see if that will work or not (I don't know if the pulse rate or the size of the voltage pulses will be compatible). I don't think it will be possible to easily rewire your car to adapt it to the full digital data system without changing the controllers and the harnesses and the cluster.
I think you should go back to whoever sold you the trans and question its identification because it doesn't appear to be an original trans from a '93 LeBaron sedan if it doesn't have the distance sensor on the transaxle housing extension.
