Chrysler Repair: 94 Intrepid timing cover problems, silicon rubber, right angles

Question
Hello,

I recently changed the water pump on my 94 intrepid es with a 3.5l.  all went well!  test drove no odd sounds worked great!  Put the timing cover back on and it is squeaking, rubbing and sounds like garbage.  I since removed the timing cover and checked and have found nothing!  Only makes noise with it on.

Quick Note to everyone!!! this procedure is easy don't give someone else hundreds of dollars.  A local shop quoted me 430.00 to do this and it took me 40 min to remove everything and hour to get it back together other then the timing cover problem.

My question is??? what else could be rubbing and what to do to fix?
This is actually getting the harmonic balancer hot and don't want to damage that.

I squirt some oil on the harmonic balancer and timing cover and it quieted rite up.  definitely metal to metal rub by the sound of it!

Thanks,
Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
While I haven't worked on the 3.5L engine personally, as I looked at the '94 manual I wonder whether you may have put the three covers back on in the proper order. First the small lower cover behind the damper is installed, then put on the smaller left cast metal cover, and finally put on the large stamped metal cover, and then the damper. The seal around that large stamped metal cover is reusable unless it becomes partially detached or offset from its original position. Is it possible that the sealer is no longer in its original position which results in it being closer to and even touching the damper after the damper is installed? If so, or possible, you could pull off all the old sealer and use some new silicon rubber sealer around its edge.
That is all that I can see might be causing the rubbing sound, unless the damper were not on at right angles to the crankshaft axis.
Let me know if you figure out something else of interest, please.
