Chrysler Repair: Fuel smell in 99 300M after gas fill up, system hoses, charcoal canister

Question
I'm back,i contacted you earier about a fuel smell in the cabin when i refuel and you said to check access panel to fuel tank in the trunk. I could find no access panel in the trunk and my fuel tank sets mostly under the rear seat. Any other solutions ?

Answer
Hi Judd,
Unfortunately as I said in the first response, I thought the LH body was the same for your '99 300 but I don't have a manual for that recent a version. I did just bid and won a '98 Concorde shop manual on eBay so as to bring my self more up-to-date. Maybe the access port is under the rear seat? It is worth a look. Other than that, I would be inclined to jack up the rear of the car and look for any signs of wetness along the filler pipe and at the top of the tank to the extent you can see it from below. Also check the hose from the tank that carries the vapors forward to the charcoal canister to see if there might be a leak/crack in that hose. Putting gas in the tank may pressurize it and drive fumes out of such a crack. Also open the hood and see if the smell is stronger in that area which would also implicate the vapor recovery system hoses. In the LH body, the canister is located in the right front corner of the engine compartment directly under the air cleaner housing. If there were a leak at that canister I could imagine that it might cause fumes to be drawn into the cabin shortly after you started the vehicle just following a fill-up.
I'll take a look at the '98 manual as soon as it arrives and let you know if I see any place else to check.
