Question
My car starts fine than will jerk when accelerated. It sometimes dies but, will restart but it will always start jerking whether hot or cold.

Answer
Hi Steve,
The most likely causes are worn out spark plugs or too widely gapped, a coil that is breaking down, or dirt in the fuel system, or worn valves.
The spark gap should 0.039-0.044, the spark coil primary should read 0.97-1.18 ohms, and the secondary 11,000-15,300 ohms.
You could also pull the center wire from the distributor and hold it 1/4" from the cylinder head and while a helper cranks the engine gradually move the tip further away from the head and watch for arcing at the spark tower of the coil which would show an insulation breakdown. You could also try to see if you have any fault codes: on-off-on-off-on and leave on, with the ignition key, doing that in 5 seconds or less time. Then watch the check engine light to start to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat to be sure the count is correct. The last numbers should be 5 each. Then group the numbers in pairs, so the last number will be 55 which is end of readout. Tell me anyother numbers and we'll go from there. Or you can check www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation.
A fuel filter change may be helpful if you haven't done that for 50,000 miles or so. The valves would be assessed by a compression test.
Let me know if you find something interesting and good luck.
