Chrysler Repair: Serpentine belt coming off, tensioner pulley, chrysler dealer

Question
Roland,
I had the serp belt replaced about 2 months ago and since then, It has popped off 4 times. Typically this has happened in wet conditions. I feel that the tension pulley may be set to tight. Is this possible and how do I adjust to less tension? The belt has remained intact and has not broke, and I am able to pry the tension pulley barely far enough to slide the belt back on.

Answer
Hi Jeff,
All the tensioners are non-adjustable as far as I know. Rather than focus on that I would suggest that you determine a couple of things:
Are you missing a splash shield between the right tire/wheel and the engine compartment? That shield stops water from splashing up on the belt and causing it to slip and come off the pulleys. It is a removable part (allows access to the belt/timing case area) which may have been misplaced or lost. You can find another one in a wrecking yard if yours is missing. Check a similar year model of your vehicle to see if yours is gone or go to the parts department of a Chrysler dealer and inquire.
Second, are the pulleys all in the same plane and is each pulley parallel to that plane? The tensioner pulley may be cocked and that too can cause the belt to come off. You might have to replace the tensioner were that the case.
Those are my best suggestions about this problem. Let me know, please, what you determine.
