Chrysler Repair: NO BUS message in odometer window; car starts/dies, collision detection system, chrysler sebring

Question
I TRIED INSTALLING A FM MODULATOR AND A DVD PLAY TO MY FACTORY RADIO. UPON COMPLETION I STARTED THE CAR AND IT TURNED OFF AFTER A COUPLE SECONDS. I HAVE A 2001 CHRYSLER SEBRING 4DR. WIT A 2.7 V6 ENGINE. AFTER THE CAR TURNED OFF I NOTICE THAT MY MILE READ ZERO AND "NO BUS" APPEARED WHERE MY MILEAGE SHOULD SHOW. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? DID I FRY MY COMPUTER? I CHECKED ALL FUSES. I WAS TOLD IT MAY BE A RELAY THAT I BLEW.

Answer
Hi Larry,
Unfortunately the 2001 model year is a little too recent for my resources as far a wiring diagram manual is concerned. So let me give you a few ideas based on other models of the late 90's for which I do have manuals.
The 'no bus' in the odometer window probably means that the digital network that shares data between the body computer, engine controller, transmission controller, collision detection system, instrument cluster, and yes even the radio, has shut down (although it could just be a lack of that network reaching the cluster only, but because the cluster itself wasn't involved in the audio installation I suspect it is more likely that something you did at the radio impacted the entire network). The engine shutting down after a few seconds is a symptom of the anti-theft system being activated thinking that the vehicle is in the process of being stolen, which is also part of the network. In the Sebring convert (which is truly a different wiring system than the sedan, I believe) there is one two-wire plug at the radio connected to the network. Do you have such a plug on the factory radio and did you disconnect it or otherwise manipulate it? If so that is maybe how the malfunction occurred. The wires for the network are violet/gray and white/dark green and are twisted together.
One other aspect I noted in the Sebring convert wiring is that there is one fuse that is 10 amp in the junction box that provides power to interior lights and to several computers when the car is shut off. That fuse supplies both the body computer and the radio memory. See if you can find any 10 amp fuse under the dash that might have a crack in its wire or be frankly blown. That is the only specific wiring component that I can relate to your situation. Do you notice anything else that doesn't work? The many wires from that fuse are all pink/another color striped, so that might be away to piece the system together around that fuse.
So review what you did and see if those wires were involved.
Also you might try disconnecting the battery for a half hour and then trying again to start the car. That sometimes re-boots the system. But before you try, lock and then unlock either front door to clear the alarm situation. In fact you might try to do that manoeuver now to see if that will let you get it running again. Do this using the key in the door lock.
Let me know if any of this strikes a chord with the history of your installation. I wish I had wiring diagrams specific for your vehicle but I can't afford to purchase these until they come up used on eBay and are less in demand.
