Question
thought i needed a alternater but took it off and alternator and battery was good. so i charged battery put alternator back on and car still wouldn't turn all the way over. what else could be the problem.

Answer
Hi Jay,
I'm not sure what you mean aby "wouldn't turn all the way over". If you mean that the crankshaft was engaged by the starter and would only rotate less than one revolution before stopping, then it could be that the electrical connection from the battery to the starter motor itself is not clean and tight, or that the starter motor is weak (commutator, brushes, etc. requiring a rebuild of that) or that there could be coolant in one of the cylinders due to a headgasket leak that is preventing the piston from moving to the top of its stroke due to it trying to compress water rather than air ("water lock"). So you could remove the - post clamp of the battery, then check the big wire that goes from the + clamp to the starter at the starter end of the wire to make sure the connection is clean and tight, clean the battery terminals and reconnect the - post clamp last, then try the starter again. Then you could pull the spark plugs and try cranking it over and see if and water is ejected from the plug holes when you have a friend try the starter or not, and observe how well it cranks when there is no compression being required (it should turn very well under those conditions). Then put the plugs back in if you see no water and try to start it again. Those of are some of the things that I would investigate at this point. Let me know if you find anything interesting.
