Chrysler Repair: 97 Sebring Speedo moves in neutral, salvage yard, irratic

Question
97 Sebring Conv. 2.5 V6, JXI with the side to side 123 gears. Backed out of the driveway today. Put in D, pulled forward, then tried to back up in R and just rev'd engine. Noticed speedo jumpy while stopped. Went through all gears and finally went into gear.

Could this possibly be the output sensor only?

The car otherwise drives well and I haven't determined if the problem repeats, ie. when cold etc. and it is not slipping. The car was left out for over a year by the person who gave it to me so I've been massaging all the little repairs to get it fully functional. The junk yard has been a candy store for me and this car.

Answer
Irratic speedometer is definitely tied in to the output speed sensor.  If you're shady then they are free at the salvage yard.  Just think of it as patriating it something.  Otherwise, spend a bit more money and get a new one for around $25.00 at the dealer.

Also, the longer an automatic car sits the more likely it is to "lose prime".  This is a condition where too much fluid drains back in to the pan and like a water well at home, you'll have to re-prime it all over again.  This can be done most of the times by just letting the car run a few seconds/minutes longer than you normally would prior to putting it in gear.

Another cause of loss or prime is worn seals, low fluid level and a worn out pump.  Check the fluid level, maybe do a transmission flush/filter change.  Without a check engine light you PROBABLY don't have internal problems JUST YET.
