Chrysler Repair: 91 Sebring question, valve lifter, inappropriate level

Question
I had the oil changed in my 1991 Sebring last month.  Every since then I hear a persistent clicking noise when the car is running (faster clicking when accelerated).  Prior to the oil change this clicking did not occur.  What might be the problem?

Answer
Hi B Jones,
I think you may have meant 2001 Sebring (because the Sebring wasn't introduced until 1995).
In any case, I would check the receipts/service records/recollections that you have about what weight of oil was used recently and the time before that. Usually what you are hearing is valve lifter noise due to an inappropriate level of oil pressure to operate the lifters as needed. It may well be that a lighter grade of oil was used this time which lowers the pressure in the valve train so that the lifters are not fully pumped up. Alternatively one of the lifters may have gotten some speck of dirt in its passageway. It is not likely to cause any damage to the engine unless it becomes a very loud clacking sound which would warrant opening the valve cover(s) and inspecting the valve train to ID which one is making the noise and then remedying it. So see what you can determine about weight of oil and then act accordingly at the next oil change.
