Chrysler Repair: worn pulley bearings on a/c compressor, jeep wrangler, metal debris

Question
I have a 98 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L that recently developed a loud grinding noise. I took it to the shop where I recently had the alternator replaced. They said that the bearings were worn on the pulley of the a/c compressor, causing it to spin roughly and occasionally lock up. (That would explain the burning rubber smell coming from the serpentine belt!)
They told me that I would have to replace the ENTIRE a/c system and it would cost at least a $1000.
My questions: does the entire system have to be replaced or just the pulley and/or the compressor?
If I don't replace the entire system, am I risking ruining a new compressor b/c of old metal debris circulating in the system?
Does the cost for repair sound like a reasonable estimate?
I was told by the mechanic that it would not be wise to drive the car b/c if the pulley locked up the car would just stop where it was. Is this true?
Please provide any info that may help me decide what to do. Thanks!
