Chrysler Repair: oil regular or synthetic???, conventional oil, extreme conditions

Question
hey its me again lol i wanted to know regular oil or synthetic would be better for my engine 100000 miles on it and ticking with the neon and i also know the 10w30 but synthetic or regular and why choose which one and thank you again roland

Answer
Hi Derek,
I haven't studied this question but to the extent that I have thought about it my thinking is that for an engine that already has 100,000 miles on it whatever benefit there might have been from using a synthetic from the start it is probably not going to materially prolong the engine life or save gas through reduced friction at this point in its remaining life. Maybe if I ever bought a new car I would make a concerted effort to learn the benefits, but that not being likely in the near future I have opted to stay with conventional oil in all my engines. The price differential is such that there may be as much benefit to changing conventional oil more frequently because it is less expensive to do so than to put in synthetic oil that is hard to contemplate changing it out as frequently if you know it is going to cost so much more to do so. Those are the reasons that I haven't opted to change. I don't subject my engines to extreme conditions so if it were more rugged I doubt that I would ever put it to the test.
