Answer
Hi Derek,
The Haynes manual has a clear write up and the '96 2.0L write up in my Cirrus manual is basically the same. It appears you can service it without removing anything but the valve cover and the rocker shaft. So if you don't have any reference like that send me your postal mailing address and I'll xerox copy and mail it to you.

Hi Derek,
It sounds and behaves to me like a faulty valve lash adjuster. I can't recall which engine you have, but if it is a 2.2 or 2.5 those are set up to allow you to replace the lash adjusters without disassembly of the camshaft. But let me know which it is (and the year) and I can send you whatever the manual says is the way to change out a valve lash adjuster. Most other causes would affect more than a single valve. I need to get your postal mailing address too in order to send it.
