Chrysler Repair: No spark or engine fire when turning over engine, chrysler lebaron, 1989 chrysler lebaron

Question
I own a 1989 Chrysler Lebaron.  I get no spark when trying to start it.  I am getting gas to the carb.  After turning the engine over the smell of gas permeates throught the air giving it a "flooded" smell.

What is my problem. I hope it isn't the timing chain as I have heard there have benn numerous problems with these on this make and model.

The car is a 4 cylinder and 2.5 liter.  Automatic.

Answer
Hi Shawn,
I just realized that I misread what you said, now I see that you are not getting spark, but you are getting fuel. In that case, it appears that the spark generating signal from the distributor is o.k., or you would get neither spark nor fuel. That makes me think the spark coil may be bad or its wiring. But go ahead and get the fault codes, and secondly, measure the voltage at the + post of the spark coil during a 5 second crank. See if you get 12V (when measured between the post and any ground point) that last for 5 seconds, 1-2 seconds, or not at all. Let me know the results of these tests. Forget the injector for the time being.
