Chrysler Repair: Spirit error codes, coolant temp, road wheels

Question
Hi Roland.

First, thank you very much and congratulations for your site & forum.

My car is a Spirit 1992 (Mexican series, perhaps equivalen to a previous american model)

I have read a question you answered about some spirit error codes, and that helped me, but I need to know about two more codes. Could you give me some light about it?

The error code sequence I get is:
12 22 15 21 55

I know now a little about 12, 21 and 55, but, what about 22 and 15?

Should I already burn my car or use it as a big flowerpot?

Thanks in advice for your comments.

Sincerely

Armando Soto

Answer
Hi Armando,
While you didn't mention the engine nor the transmission in the car, the codes are probably the same regardless except for details as to wiring.
The 22 code means that the coolant temp sensor or its wiring is producing a voltage outside the normal range, high or low. That sensor is on the side of the thermostat housing located between cyl 3 and 4 of the four cylinder on the side of that engine that faces the front of the car. I would examine the wiring for cracked insulation or broken wires, and if you would like I can tell you which pins on the 60-way plug to the engine controller those wires are attached so you can check their patency. If that proves out, then the resistance of the unit could be checked. It should read 7,000-14,000 ohms at 70F and 700-1,000 ohms at 200F.
On the 15 code, the controller is saying that it isn't getting the pulsed signal from the distance sensor on the transmission whose frequency is proportional to the speed of the road wheels. The speedometer should be impaired as well as some engine performance aspects were this the case. Again check the wires, the sensor being located on the top of the transaxle extension housing (the area of the trans from which the half axles are driven) and you could also check whether the output of the sensor is pulsing as far as its resistance in synchrony with the rotation of the road wheels (front end of car up on jack stands, engine running, in gear, road wheels rotating; eight puslses per one rotation).
So don't give up on the vehicle. These are easily resolved problems.
