Chrysler Repair: 1999 Sebring Speaker Problem, panasonic car stereo, chrysler sebring

Question
My wife recently had problems with the radio in her 1999 Chrysler Sebring. It would work for a while, and then not at all, and then work for a a while, and then not at all. Well it hasn't come on for about six months, it has just been completely dead. I checked the fuse and it seemed to be in tact and all the wires were still connected. I purchased a panasonic car stereo to replace the factory one. The new Stereo comes on but no sound comes from the car speakers. I checked all the wiring to the car stereo, no problems there, and also hooked up an external speaker and got sound from the stereo, so I know it is not the problem. Any ideas on what to do next?

Answer
Hi Jason,
Did the original system have a CD player also? If so, then there is likely to be a separate amplifier under the panel below the rear window (sedan) or in the trunk(convertible). I am working from a '95 manual that doesn't show the location of the amp in the convertible, but it is likely in the trunk. So if you have that more expensive unit the trouble may be with that amplifier unit not the unit at the dash. And the new Panasonic unit may not be set up with the proper impedences to serve as a signal source for that amplifier unit, if it is working.
Also, are you aware that there are several fuses associated with the radio? Under the dash fuse 1 is dedicated to the radio amplifier used in the more expensive CD player unit. And in the engine compartment (box at the left front) fuses 4, 10 and 11 (4 and 10 also serve other circuits, but 11 is solely for the radio). Look very closely at the wires inside the fuses because they can fail with just a slight crack, or better yet check them with an ohmmeter or simple continuity testor.
So those are a couple of possibilities to look into.
