Chrysler Repair: fuel problems 1995 Chrysler LHS, wound resistor, chrysler lhs

Question
I recently ran the car to 34 miles to empty and when i tried to start the car it would not start, I went to the store and got 3 gallons of gas and poured them in the car marked the gas on the guage and on the over head digital display, then the car started and as soon as it started the digital display started to go down and the guage did the same and it would shut off. i got the codes for the car from the check engine light and all it read was 12 which is computer or battery recenly diconected which the batery which was diconected for a period of a day or so while I replaced the door whis was damaged , also the car was lifted on the front end to check for leaks and I tried to start the car while it was lifted before I poured 3 gallons of gas . could you please shed some light to see what it may be. I checked the fuel relay and it was good. some one told me it could be the fuel float
Thanks

Answer
Hi Robert,
I am unclear as to whether the engine still will not start or if the issue is merely the fuel level gauges. Whenever the fuel gets very low there is an increased chance that water and corrosion debris in the tank will be pumped thru to the fuel filter which then clogs and reduces the pressure in the injector system. So you might want to consider doing two things: changing the fuel filter if that hasn't been done recently and adding a container of fuel tank 'water dispersant' which will spread out any water condensate more evenly throughout the fuel until it can be used up by the normal use of the car.
The fuel float may well be the problem with the gauges. But I would try to fill the tank more fully and see if it behaves more normally. Sometimes the float is o.k. and it is just a matter of the float sliding contact passing over a portion of the wire-wound resistor that has some corrosion or oxidation on it because the fuel rarely was that low in the tank during the car's history so you get a discontinuity in the reading with a very low level in the tank.
Let me know if the problem with starting persists. The code 12 sounds normal and it doesn't appear there is any other reason for non-starting.
