Chrysler Repair: engine coads, dodge carivan, catilitic converter

i have a 1999 dodge carivan 2.5 engine.  the engine has started serging as if a dirty fule filter which i changed, to no avail. i checked the catilitic converter which is not pluged. the check engine light is on telling me there is a code in the computer. how do i read this coad with out buying a coad reader tool

You may be able to get a free readout at an autoparts store like Autozone, at least that what others who bring questions here have told me. If that isn't available near you, then call around to local service shops to see what they charge for a readout. I have seen them advertised for $40 for that service. If you don't want to try to fix it yourself they may apply that $40 to the repair bill. But if not, then get the code number(s) and what they say it means is wrong, what they would suggest doing, and how much they would charge. Then write back and we'll compare that with what the manuals I have say about it.
