Chrysler Repair: Replacing a tail light, haynes manual, work bench

Question
Hi Roland-

I am trying to replace the cracked housing of a tail light on a 1996 Chrysler TOWN & COUNTRY. I unscrewed the screws, but I cannot get the plug to come off. Is there a trick to this? I thought it would be simple, but I just don't know what I am doing wrong, and I definately don't want to break anything else. Could you walk me through the process?

Thanks,
Debbie

Answer
Hi Debbie,
I don't have personal experience with the van, but my Haynes manual for those years shows you open the tail gate, remove the screws that hold the assembly to the door opening. Then you disengage the assembly by disengaging a hook that holds the outer side of the assembly to the body, and the assembly should swing away to give you access to the bulbs and their sockets, and I presume to the screws that hold the cracked housing to the assembly, though it is not clear to me what part is cracked, etc. But once you get the entire assembly to release, it should be clear what to do next. To completely remove the assembly you have to depress the lock tab on the wire harness connector, and separate the connector (that ties the incoming wires to the assembly). Then you should be able to work on the "disembodied" tail light assembly on your work bench.
