Chrysler Repair: 98 sebring Trans downshifting, solenoid pack, solenoid switch

Question
1998 sebring jx 2.4.  Shifts great all the time. But, while highway driving, sometimes it will downshift from overdrive into 2nd.  Chrysler people told me I had these codes P1776(solenoid switch), P1738 (High temp operation). They said I would need a valve body, solenoid pack and trans service. Talked to another Chrysler mech., he said I would need a new valve body(probable debris in old one).  My trans guy coded "EATX Controller DTC Present" and there may be a EATX relay we could change. I have changed two of the three speed sensors previously. The one I did not change is the triangle bolted up one.  What do you think ?

Answer
Hi Greg,
Having several readouts is helpful. There are actually two possible solenoid switch codes (solenoid stuck in either LO or LR position). But the possible remedies are identical:
check solenoid clutch pack, check valve body surface for warpage, repair solenoid switch valve, and finally check solenoid pack and valve body for sticking valves.
The dealer and the other Chrysler mech sound like they have a better handle on this than your other trans guy.
I don't see a reference to a third speed sensor, but there are other sensors, including a temp sensor, but I don't think those may be relevant to the solenoid issue.
The high temp code is one that more often is associated with the use of autostick. It will be set if the engine temp goes over 255F or the trans temp goes over 280F.
The possible causes in addition to true overheating is a faulty thermistor (temp sensor) in the trans.
It disables autostick, when that code is recorded, until the temps drop to acceptable range.
So I would get an estimate from the dealer and the other Chrysler mech. and consider what you know about each of them, and go with that in making a choice. It sounds like you won't have to remove the transaxle and get into that can of worms and costs, which is hopeful.
Let me know how it is resolved, please.
