Motorcycle Repair: ignition problems, meter test, engine didn

Question
Hey Mike,
Thanks for your reply yesterday, but that exposed wire from the regulator didn't turn out to be the problem.  I taped it up, but still had problems.  When I tried starting my bike, the first thing I noticed was that the battery seemed nearly dead.  The headlight had barely lit up. After inspection of the battery I decided to empty the water from the battery and give it fresh distilled.  That seemed to help the battery a bit.  It shone brighter, but the engine didn't wanna start when I tried kicking it over, (its a kickstart only) I would get it to ignite the cylinders for maybe one or two revolutions, but it wouldn't catch.  It appeared that shifting the battery around a bit resulted in having the headlight shine brighter and then dimmer depending on what position the batery was in.  There was enough juice to start the bike, but it just wouldn't start.  Combined with my question from 2 days ago(about the sputtering during severe acceleration), do you know what's going on?  Thanks

Answer
First thing is you cant dump the water out of the battery and put in new. You also dumped the acid. You will have to get a new battery.
Once you have the new battery installed and get the bike running, using a volt meter, test at the battery to see what voltage you have. At 2000 RPM you should be getting around 13.5 volts. If not, then either your voltage regulator or stator is bad.
If you need to know how to test them let me know after you test the voltage.
