Chrysler Repair: Chrysler New Yorker - no spark, distributor shaft, chrysler new yorker

Question
Roland,

Could really use some advice - 1993 New Yorker 2.5 L. Am getting no spark from primary coil lead or the distributor.Starter cranks and engine tries to start but won't.Fuel ok.
The coil tested shorted - replaced it and no change.Distributor was not rotating - replaced the oil pump - gear was worn-looking. Still not rotating.Timing belt was torn up - replaced it.
Still no spark and dist still not rotating - stumped!?

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Answer
Hi Carl,
I would take a look at the gear on the intermediate shaft that drives the distributor (remove the distributor and look down the hole while a helper cranks the engine) to see if it is turning or not. It is possible that the shaft is broken if it doesn't turn (it is hard to believe that the timing belt isn't driving the sproket on the shaft, and the sproket is keyed to the shaft, so if it doesn't turn then the shaft has to have a break in it). If it does turn then the mating gear on the end of the distributor shaft is not pinned into the distributor shaft and is thus slipping or they aren't mating because they aren't aligned and the distrbutor shaft needs to be realigned with the intermediate shaft gear and go down further in the hole.
The reason you don't get spark is because the distributor is not turning. The ASD relay will disable the spark coil, the fuel pump, and the O2 sensors if the distributor is not rotating such as to send a Hall effect sensor pulse signal to the engine controller which will then shut down the ASD as the result of not getting the pulses.
So that is my best guess. Let me know what you find.
