Chrysler Repair: CHARGING SYSTEM, ais motor, field coils

WHEN I INSTALLED THE ALTERNATOR FROM THE 92 3.3L NEW YORKER ONTO MY 3.0L 91 LEBARON THE VOLTS HELD AT APPROX 13 VOLTS FOR APPROX 2 MINUTES THAN PLUNGED TO NOTHING AND NOW ASIDE FROM THE TROUBLE CODE TELLING ME THE ALTERNATOR ISNT SWITCHING FIELDS PROPERLY I NOW HAVE A CODE TELLING ME THERE IS A SHORTED CONDITION IN THE AUTOMATIC IDLE SPEED CIRCUIT.  ANY IDEAS?  REALLY STUMPED THIS TIME.THKS

Hi Duane,
There is a black colored, 10-pin, plug-together disconnect located behind the battery that carries the wires for both the AIS motor AND the alternator field coils. So I would recommend that you locate that disconnect and see if it is ajar or damaged in some manner. That is the most obvious suspect for a dual mode failure that you describe. The injectors and the coil wiring are also involved thru that disconnect so it it pretty central to the operation of the engine. So look that over, and let me know what you find. Also check fuse #42 just in case because that one is necessary for the operation of the field coils.
