Chrysler Repair: timing marks, tdc 3.0 dual overhead cams, timing belt tensioner, dual overhead cams

Question
i need to locate tdc to reset the timing after replacing the cam seal.  i have tried several methods yet none have corrected the timing.  the marks on the crank and front cam align accordind to the book and the rear cams' mark always ends up at approx 1000 oclock instead of the approx 1 oclock as shown in manual.  do i need to find tdc of another cyl or am i missing something?  THE TIMING ALWAYS REQUIRES GIVING THROTTLE TO START WONT IDLE HAS SOME CLATTER AND RICH IN FUEL FUMES.  NEVER HAD THESE PROBLEMS UNTIL REPLACING CAM SEAL AND INADVERTANTLY MOVING THE PULLEY POSITIONS. NEED HELP AND ADVICE FAST AND ACCURATELY. THANKS.

Answer
Hi Duane,
I assume that you are working with the Mitsubishi 3.0L V-6 engine. If not let me know. According to the '94 shop manual here is the procedure:
After lining up the timing marks-
1. Install timing belt tensioner and tension spring.
2. Hook spring upper end to water pump pin and lower end to tensioner
bracket with hook pointing out.
3. Turn timing belt tensioner counter-clockwise full travel in
adjustment slot and tighten bolt to temporarily hold this position.
Then to install the belt:
1. Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket first and while keeping
belt tight on tension side install belt on the front (radiator side)
camshaft sprocket
2. Then install on the water pump pulley and on the rear camshaft
sprocket and finally on the timing belt tensionser.
3. Apply rotating force to the front camshaft sprocket in opposite
direction to tension the belt tension side, check that all timing
marks are lined up.
4. Install crankshaft sprocket flange.
5. Loosen tenioner bolt and allow spring to tension timing belt.
6. Turn crankshaft two full turns in clockwise direction. Turn
smoothly and in clockwise direction only.
7. Again line up the timing marks on the sprockets and tighten the
timing belt tensioner locking bolt to 25 N-m (250 in. pounds) torque.
8. Reassemble belt covers, engine bracket, insulator, crankshaft
pulleys, accesories and accesory drive belts in reverse order.

This procedure might help you insure that the timing marks end up
aligned.
