Chrysler Repair: fuel level unit/gauge, chrysler concorde, 1994 chrysler concorde

Question
1994 Chrysler Concorde fuel gauge goes down to half tank and then it stops. Appreciate any help or comments. I noticed unusual fluctuation of the needle last night.

Answer
Hi Fred,
The chances are that the sending unit in the trunk has some discontinuities in its electrical connection to the variable resistor.
You can check the resistance value at the present level by removing the carpet in the trunk and then the round access port which allows you to reach the top of tank and the electrical plug-in to the sender and pump.
The sender has pins #2 and 4 counting from either end of the 5 pins. With the tank empty it should read around 1,000 ohms and full about 6 ohms, varying smoothly for in between levels.  See how it behaves for a few more tanks, and if it
is still troubling, you can remove the unit and perhaps look over the motion of the float and the electrical track along which it travels. The Haynes manual shows the float and how to replace that unit, so let me know a postal mailing address and I'll send you a xerox copy of the pages.
