Chrysler Repair: cv joint removal, cv joints, transaxle


Question
how do i get the cv inner cup out of the tranny? its a 97 lhs im replacing the cv joints and got to the inner cup but it wont come out . it said on the box that if u lift the other side and hit the axle to punch it out. well i lifted the car off the ground and now i cant get the shaft off.

Hi Joe,
If you are speaking of the right side half shaft, then the reason it won't release is because the distance sensor gear which drives the signal for the speedo/odo has to be taken out from its location on the top of the transaxle housing extension. That gear is interconnected to the half-shaft and if you force it out you damage the sensor gear. So look on the top of the housing from which the half-shafts protrude and you will see a device with a two wire lead and held in place by a single bolt (or maybe 2). Just remove the bolt and lift it out of the housing. Then the right half shaft should come out. Check the gear for signs of any damage. A replacement is available from the dealer.
