Chrysler Repair: Seat Belt Retractor, sebring jx, release lever

Question
Hello. I tried to replace a missing seat belt retractor guide on the passenger seat headrest of a 2000 Sebring JX convertible. I bought the car used several months ago. It was formerly a rental vehicle. I removed the belt from the floor bolt to install the guide and now the retractor for some reason now won't retract. It does not appear to be jammed as I can retract the belt a little at a time with slight tugs. Without tension the belt recoil device then lets go and I have to start all over again. Any ideas? Do I have to replace the entire seat? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Alan,
I am not that familiar post-95 Chryslers, but on my '89 LeBaron the retractor is housed behind the panel that is located behind the door  opening and you have to remove it to reach the retractor mechanixm. There is a pushbutton that actuates the retractor which is activated when you close the door. It is located in lower rear door opening and is pushed in by the inner edge of the door. If that push buuton weren't making contact with the retactor's release lever it wouldn't retract. So you may have to remove the panel to go and look. Unfortunatley my knowledge of panel removal on the Sebring is limited but when I can check my '94 manual I can tell you how it is done on '94 LeBaron Convert. I am away from my manuals but will have access later in the day and I'll get back to you then.
