Classic/Antique Car Repair: MGB starter not turning, starter solenoid, test light

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 1976 MGB with 76K miles.  I had the MGB out for a run into a store. When I returned and tried starting the car the starter would not turn.  When I turn the key the dash board lights turn on and the fuel pump clicks in fact all electrical seems to work (headlights, wipers) but no sound from the starter.  The battery is brand new.  Any ideas of the issue and how I can diagnose the problem?  Thank you.

ANSWER: A couple of questions. Does the starter even click when you try to start the car? Do the head lights stay on when you engage the starter or do they go out? let me know.

QUESTION: Thanks Brad. When I turn the ignition the starter does not click or make any sounds and the headlights do stay. I have tried to trace the ignition wire to the solenoid and I checked all of the connections all seem clean and tight.  The only thought I have is there is something wrong with the actual ignition switch itself. It it is the ignition switch I should be able to bypass it but not sure how.

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Connect a voltmeter or a test light to the terminal on the starter solenoid that runs from the ignition switch. Turn the key and the test light should light or the voltmeter show battery voltage. If there is no light or voltage the problem is the ignition switch. If there is light or voltage the problem is the solenoid or starter.
